Five games went to penalties in last night Johnston's Paint Trophy games. Torquay were two goals up, but ended up losing 5-3 on penalties. A Tim sill's goal and a Nicky Wroe penalty put Torquay two up, but a brace from Papa Waigo ensured spot kicks.
An amazing second half at Saltergate saw Chesterfield and Huddersfield draw 3-3. At half time it was 0-0, but a brace from Drew Talbot either side of a Anthony Pilkington strike put the Spirerites 2-1 up, and they thought they had won it in normal time thanks to a 90th minute Jordan Bowery goal. But two goals in injury time from Anthony Pilkington and Jim Goodwin ensured penalties which saw Chesterfield progress with a 4-2 win. Bradford beat Notts County 3-2 and Hereford United beat Aldershot Town 4-3 on penalties, after the games finishing 2-2 after 90 minutes. Swindon beat Exeter 4-3 on penalties. Gigg lane saw Bury beating Tranmere 2-1 after Rovers had gone a goal up. Carlisle and Macclesfield were involved in a six goal thriller which saw Carlisle win 4-2. The biggest win of the night came at the Valley as Charlton brushed aside Barnet 4-1. Out of the 15 games played last there were just two away victories, they went to Norwich City and Grimsby Town. Leeds United beat Darlington 2-1 in Steve Staunton's first game in charge. Brighton and Hove Albion went away empty handed as they lost 1-0 to Leyton Orient thanks to an 89th minute Adrian Patulea goal. Aaron Doran, on loan from Blackburn Rovers scored on his debut to help MK Dons to a 2-1 victory. Northampton Town beat league two leaders 2-1 in Ian Sampson's first game in charge. At Vale Park, Stockport County went away empty handed as they lost to Port Vale 3-1.
In the Conference York maintained their unbeaten run to ten games as they condemned Tamworth to their first defeat at the Lamb this season. Goals from former Hereford United player Andy Ferrell, Richard Brodie and Djoumin Sangare were sandwiched between a Richard Tait brace, to ensure York won 3-2.
