Club history - Hampton and Richmond Borough

In the first of a new series in which I will be looking at the history of clubs in the Blue Square Premier, North and South, I am going to start with Hampton and Richmond Borough FC.

Hampton and Richmond Borough FC where formed in 1921, but it wasn’t until 1999 that the club became known as this. Previously the club was known as Hampton FC.

The formative years in the clubs history were spent in the Kingston and District and South West Middlesex Leagues. In 1959 the club acquired the lease of their ground, the Beveree, which is located on the banks on the River Thames. Hampton FC joined the Surrey Senior League, and the club won the Championship in 1964, and as a result of this success where accepted into the Spartan League.

After joining the Spartan the club went through a successful run which saw the club win 4 league titles, and finish runners up once in the space of seven years. Once floodlights were installed at the Beveree Hampton joined the Athenian league in which the club spent two seasons, before moving up the to the Isthmian League.

Hampton remained in the Isthmian league, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that the club started going through a run of being a yoyo club as promotions and relegations until the club made the Isthmian Premier Division in 1998 /1999.

In 2000/2001 season Hampton made the FA Cup First Round proper for the first time where they met Barnet, and were winning before the game finished in disappointment. Unfortunately the team lost 2-1, even though Hampton where winning with ten minutes to go.

Hampton almost got into the Blue Square south in 2004 / 2005 season, but missed out on the playoffs by one point. The following season Hampton got to the playoff final but once again it ended in disappointment with a 3-0 defeat to the hands of Fisher Athletic. The Middlesex Senior Cup was won for the first time in the clubs history thanks to a penalty shootout victory over Hayes.

The club finally made the jump to the Conference South in the 2007/2008 thanks to a thrilling last day of the season. The following season Hampton finished third and qualified for the playoffs, but this ultimately finished in disappointment despite beating Fisher Athletic in the Semi finals. Eastbourne Borough denied Hampton what would have been an unexpected promotion. Dagenham and Redbridge knocked the club out of the FA Cup in the first round. Hendon were defeated 3-0 though as Hampton FC claimed the Middlesex Senior Cup for the second time in the clubs history.
